Toyota RAV4 XLE’s Defective Power Liftgate Issues Are Not Covered Under Warranty.

Toyota Rav4 Power Liftgate Hinges Cracking

The Issue

Owners of the Toyota RAV4 XLE are having a problem with

power liftgate hinges cracking.

The liftgate struts stop working and the hinge becomes bent. So, the issue is stemming from faulty lift gate actuators and struts.

Dealerships claim the issue is not covered under warranty, alleging that the vehicle owners did the damage themselves or that the wind did the damage.

The basic warranty for the Toyota RAV4 XLE is three years/36,000 miles and 5 yr/60,000 miles powertrain. The warranty for the hybrid system is 8 yr/100,000 miles.

Some assertive customers have been able to get the problem fixed under warranty, but most customers most likely will have to pay for the repair themselves.

Customers unable to get the liftgate hinges repaired under warranty will have to pay for the replacement, costing $500-$700 depending on the auto shop.

The lift gate decided to try to close crooked in a parking lot one day on us. Dealership asked almost double digit amount of times if we 'got in an accident'.

Sorry buddy, but there's not a scratch or dent on this vehicle. I feel like one would have to kick the door with a few hundred pounds from the front side in order for this to happen, but whatever.

Lease 2019 XLE 16k

They're currently saying it's not under warranty, and that we somehow damaged it ourselves. Sorry, but you guys have seen my truck. That's an absolute lie. Reading lease agreement now. (Source: Reddit)

This is an issue stemming from faulty lift gate actuators (struts). The force from the heavy lift gate and bad actuators caused damage to the body under one of the hinges.

The body under the hinge can be bent back in to place with the right technique, which is how the shop was able to make it sit flush with the Sienna struts.

This seems to be a similar scenario to the original post, but instead the body of your truck bent before the hinge bent.

The corrosion results in rust development on the doors panels and door hinges.

Customers are stating the corrosion warranties are a sham.

There have been other similar cases against other manufacturers regarding corroded door hinges.

Class Action FAQ:

Q1: Will this cost me any money?

A1: No. Attorneys in class action only get paid if they win. And the company we are suing foots our bill.

Q2: What do I gain from signing up for this case?

A2: The goal of this case is to hold companies accountable for their bad behavior, and you can help.

If the case succeeds, judges usually award class representatives $1,000 - $10,000 to those who sign up to be a class representative.

But if you are doing it for the money, you aren’t the right candidate for us. We are looking for class representatives who are looking for justice, not easy cash.
